Coast Guard commandant testifies before Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Marine Transportation

Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Paul Zukunft testified on the military branch’s Fiscal Year 2019 Budget before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation. He highlighted the service’s efforts to combat dangerous transnational organized crime networks and the funding and support of the Coast Guard’s future major cutter fleet to include Offshore Patrol Cutters, Fast Response Cutters, National Security Cutters and the polar icebreaker program.

Tradewinds Exercise 2016: Enhancing defense forces, combating transnational crime

The 2016 Tradewinds exercise is in full swing. The exercise is designed to help nations become better equipped when responding to natural disasters and land and maritime threats, including illicit trafficking. Tradewinds has also been identified in the Coast Guard commandant’s Western Hemisphere Strategy as a crucial cornerstone to the fight against countering transnational organized crime in the Caribbean region, specifically smuggling illicit drugs, people and weapons.

Coast Guard Cutter Valiant: Interdicting drugs, detaining suspected smugglers and building relationships

Returning from a two month counter-narcotics patrol, Coast Guard Cutter Valiant stopped in Panama to work with the country’s National Air and Naval Service, referred to as SENAN. This exchange gave Valiant crewmembers the opportunity to share techniques and best practices for law enforcement, small boat operations, voice and visual communications, and operational risk management.

Western Hemisphere Strategy in action: Helping Haiti rebuild 5 years later

Five years later, Haiti still has many challenges, but the U.S. Coast Guard continues to help the country move forward. The recently signed Western Hemisphere Strategy has once again put Haiti in the forefront and made the country a top priority.
