Letter of Intent

A ‘Royal’ relationship

Beginning in October, several enlisted Coast Guardsmen will join their seagoing counterparts from the U.K. to support the manpower needs of its Type 23 frigates. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Paul F. Zukunft and First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff of the U.K. Royal Navy Sir Adm. George Zambellas signed a memorandum of understanding Wednesday, which aims to strengthen the maritime partnership between the United States and the United Kingdom.

Sea stories: Below decks

The first thing you notice in the engine room of Coast Guard Barque Eagle is the sound, registering in excess of 84 decibels. Located eight feet below the waterline, an unmistakable odor permeates the air. It’s a mixture of machine-grade lube oil and jacket water, essential components for cooling the engine.

Shipmate of the Week – MK2 Ryan Horsley

Coast Guard Cutter Sherman returned to homeport last week after a 50-day deployment to disrupt illicit and illegal activity from reaching the shores of the United States. While there were plenty of accomplishments at sea, it was the men and women below deck who were making the mission execution possible. One of the engine room’s standouts was Petty Officer 2nd Class Ryan Horsley.

MK2 Ball

As a member of Maritime Safety and Security Team Seattle, Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Ball has seen his fare share of challenging missions. But one recent exercise had Ball far outside of his comfort zone during the Mangudai Warrior Challenge at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

Shipmate of the Week – MKCM Jennifer Lowden

As family, friends, coworkers and students gathered on the gun deck of Taylor Hall at Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown, many did not know that they’d be witnessing Coast Guard history. While three people were advanced to master chief petty officer that day, the advancement of Jennifer Lowden was particularly notable. Standing on the same grounds where she was a 25-year-old machinery technician student, Lowden became the first female to join the highest ranks in her profession when her husband and her mother impressed the master chief insignia onto her shirt collar.

MK2 Pearson

Shipmate of the Week – MK2 Josh Pearson

Petty Officer 2nd Class Josh Pearson is a machinery technician, one of the Coast Guard’s largest enlisted ratings. As a machinery technician, Pearson is a leader and manager, with a breadth of knowledge in all areas of machinery operation and maintenance. Pearson, alongside his engineering team, discovered the seas were so large, the bottom of the cutter was being exposed to air – either from excessive side-to-side rocking or when becoming airborne over the crest of a wave.

Petty Officer Wilmot

Shipmate of the Week – MK1 Joseph Wilmot

Coast Guard Cutter Bainbridge Island was shorthanded and in need of an engineering petty officer. When the call for help was sent out, Petty Officer 1st Class Joseph Wilmot answered. A machinery technician by trade, Wilmot was no stranger to rolling up his sleeves and getting dirty. And that is just what he did aboard Bainbridge Island as he became responsible for the maintenance and repair of all machinery aboard the ship.
