Honoring our veterans

Coast Guard men and women, their families, friends and former members placed the flags Saturday, during the Flags Across America event, an annual observance where volunteers come out to honor the fallen ahead of Veterans Day.

Sporting t-shirts with the motto, "Our heroes will not be forgotten," Flags Across America volunteers remember American Airlines Flight 77, hijacked by terrorists on 11 September 2001 and crashed into The Pentagon. Remembering 9/11: Flags Across America

The U.S. Coast Guard Flags Across America program, sponsored by the Washington, D.C., Chapter of the Coast Guard Chief Petty Officers Association, gathers on Sept. 11 each year to honor the 184 American patriots who gave their lives on 9/11 at the Pentagon. Sporting t-shirts with the motto, “Our heroes will not be forgotten,” the Flags Across America volunteers remembered American Airlines Flight 77, hijacked by terrorists on 11 September 2001 and crashed into the Pentagon after it took off from Washington Dulles International Airport.

The sun began to rise as Coast Guard families, recruits, scouts and cadets gathered at Arlington National Cemetery. At 65 degrees with blue skies and the sun’s golden rays shining through autumn leaves, it was an iconic fall day; a day to honor the history, traditions and heritage of servicemembers past and present.

It was two days before Americans would come together to honor our nation’s veterans when a small group gathered at Arlington National Cemetery in the early morning light. The cemetery was empty when they first arrived but by the time they would leave, a sea of fluttering Coast Guard and American flags would soon interrupt the pattern of white marble headstones and green grass.
