The Coast Guard’s National Capitol Region Air Defense Facility, which is supported with both permanent crews and temporarily assigned aircrews from nearby Air Station Atlantic City, New Jersey, is the nations only helicopter alert facility in the country.

Serving as a yeoman, the Coast Guard’s name for an administrative specialist, Blas is a critical behind-the-scenes component to keeping his Coast Guard shipmates always ready. Blas works in the air station’s servicing personnel office, where yeomen administratively take care of the air station’s 254 crewmembers, focusing heavily on customer service.

Some may see Coast Guardsmen jumping out of helicopters, driving boats through breaking surf or firing dangerous weapons as intimidating, or even frightening, but to the more than 200 Coast Guard recruits who got a sneak peek of the Coast Guard’s Top 10 Videos of 2012, the thought of doing these things is motivating. The recruits packed the Ida Lewis Auditorium at Coast Guard Training Center Cape May for the second annual Coast Guard Top 10 Video Premiere at the only enlisted Coast Guard basic training facility in the nation.

Coast Guard responds in the wake of Sandy

The Coast Guard has a proud tradition of preserving life in even the most adverse conditions and stood ready to continue that tradition in the wake of Sandy. Coast Guard helicopter crews were busy responding to multiple requests to rescue people who were trapped in their homes in the wake of the storm. Coast Guard aircrews were sent from both air stations Atlantic City and Cape Cod to provide search and rescue response.
