Thankful for: My husband

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we reached out to Coast Guard members, families and friends to see what they were thankful for this holiday season. All week long, Compass will be sharing these stories of thankfulness from in and around the Coast Guard community. The below post is a personal letter written by Marci Williams, who is thankful for her husband, Cmdr. John Williams, who is currently stationed at Coast Guard Air Station Savannah.

Thankful for: My husband

Written by Marci Williams

Dear John,

I wanted to thank you for everything you have done for our family. You are a true hero – not just because of your service to our country, but because you always put your family first.

Nearly 15 years ago, while you and I were happily enjoying our first year of marriage and you were deployed, we had the most unfathomable thing happen.

You received a phone call from a hospital 1,500 miles away saying your wife and unborn child were in a crash and wouldn’t make it through the night. After enduring an airplane flight that I hope no other person will have to experience, you found me at the hospital broken, swollen, bruised and barely breathing.

We are blessed that you did not have to say goodbye to me, but instead, helped nurse me back to health. I can never thank you enough for believing in me and changing my bed pans in the hospital when the ICU nurses were overwhelmed with too many patients. You read books to me until your eyes burned, you gave me sponge baths, helped teach me how to walk again, and fed me shakes through the wires that sealed my broken jaw. You took me to 37 surgeries and never complained once – you never do!

You, my sweet, unsung hero, had to deal with driving me to four doctor appointments each week, insurance phone calls on a daily basis, lawyers and the prosecutors, all while being an active duty Coast Guard pilot and a father of a new-born baby. You had a wife with PTSD, and you still treated me like a queen and have every day since that horrific day. You always make everyone feel special and I can’t even count how many people have approached me telling me how thankful they are to have served with you in the Coast Guard.

Our daughter always tells me that she wants to join the military as a nurse, and marry someone just like daddy. Our son, Luke, calls us lucky. We are blessed to have you for a daddy and husband, and I thank my lucky stars every single day.

Cmdr. John A. Williams – I salute you on Thanksgiving and every day!

Forever isn’t long enough,
