The Coast Guard continues our #NewYearNewFilter and the launch of our official Instagram account with a new perspective this week! We’ve asked Coast Guard members from around the fleet to be guest Instagrammers and in the past three weeks you’ve seen perspectives from Seaman Frank Iannazzo-Simmons at Patrol Forces Southwest Asia, Chief Warrant Officer Donnie Brzuska at Training Center Cape May and Petty Officer 1st Class Ian Powell’s life as a rescue swimmer. This week, Seaman Rebecca Ward will use Instagram to share her life aboard a Coast Guard buoy tender. Read her introduction below, then follow us on Instagram!
Hello, my name is Seaman Rebecca Ward. I am currently stationed on U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Ida Lewis out of Newport, Rhode Island. Ida Lewis is a 175′ buoy tender named after the famous lighthouse keeper. Because Ida Lewis was the first commissioned cutter in the Keeper Class, we are considered to be the “Mother of all Keepers.”
Our main objective is to service all of the aids to navigation in the New England area. I have been aboard Ida Lewis for almost two years. Since then I have become qualified in SEOPS – special and emergency operation procedure, in port watchstander, helm and lookout, generator watchstander, buoy deck rigger, aids to navigation light technician and junior officer of the deck.
Ida Lewis consists of 21 enlisted sailors – 17 men and 4 women – and one chief warrant officer. For the next week I will be posting pictures of my life on a Coast Guard buoy tender, I hope you enjoy.
