I am proud to recognize the Department of Homeland Security on its eighth anniversary of service to our great Nation today. I know that all Coast Guard men and women join me in saying we are honored to serve as the maritime arm of DHS, protecting about two million square miles of exclusive economic zone, 97,000 miles of coastline, and 50,000 miles of navigable waterways.

Since its formation in 2003, DHS has made extraordinary strides in counterterrorism, border security, immigration enforcement, cybersecurity, and disaster preparedness, response and recovery. This and other vital work continues across DHS so that we may provide the best security for our Nation.

The Coast Guard stands behind our Secretary, Janet Napolitano, and her leadership team, as well as beside our colleagues in other DHS agencies, to protect our homeland and respond when disaster strikes.

Happy eighth to all who serve in DHS!

Semper Paratus,

Adm. Bob Papp
Commandant
