Today Coast Guard crews from the International Ice Patrol and Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., gathered in Halifax, Canada, to remember the victims of the Titanic on the 98th anniversary of the disaster.  These crews have a special connection to the Titanic because the ice patrol mission was formed in its aftermath.

Many of their Canadian partners in monitoring ice are located here in Halifax.  Often on their way north to patrol they’ll stop to meet with these agencies.   When they’re in town this time of year they also like to take time to visit and honor the many victims buried in Halifax.

“Remembering why we exist keeps our focus on the execution of the mission,” said Cmdr. Scott Rogerson, commander of IIP.

During the ceremony 3 wreaths were dedicated and they’ll be dropped from the air as they patrol later this week.

We’ll be bringing you those images and the rest of the IIP series in the coming days.  A Flickr set with more images of today’s ceremony are linked to each of the pictures below.  There is also a YouTube video linked to the image above.  Finally, you can keep up with all of the post in this series with this link.
