  • Guardians from sector Hampton Roads responded Friday morning to a runaway 571-foot barge that grounded near a fishing pier in Sandbridge, VA. A Coast Guard crew from the Atlantic Strike Team confirmed that all chemicals on board the vessel are safely contained. Coast Guard and local response crews continue to monitor the barge and are working with a salvage company to prevent it from moving any closer to the pier and refloat it.   • After 66 years, former Guardian Franklin P. Elliot was awarded the Coast Guard Commendation Medal posthumously. Elliot was cited for outstanding achievement and heroism for his efforts during a shipboard fire on the S.S. El Estero on April 24, 1943. Elliot’s son, Steven M. Elliot accepted the medal during a ceremony at Naval Station Mayport, FL. Click here for images of the ceremony.

  • Coast Guard and Marine Corp ships and aircraft searched the waters off the Big Island since Friday for a 23-year-old fisherman who was reported missing from a 34-foot boat. Air crews from Air Station Barbers Point, the crew of the CGC Kiska and air crews from Marine Corps Base Hawaii have covered an area of more than 6,000 miles. As of Saturday afternoon, poor weather conditions were hindering the search. The missing man was not wearing a life jacket.

  • Guardians responded to a request for assistance from a cargo ship located 200 miles south of Venice, LA. A rescue crew from Air Station New Orleans medevaced a man experiencing chest pains Saturday morning and safely transported him for medical treatment in Marrero, LA.
