Labor Day Weekend Safety Reminder

Today, in the busy rush hour traffic of the Washington DC area, a boat came off its trailer and ended up in the far left lane on the beltway.

What does that have to do with the Coast Guard, you ask? Well, if you think this situation is an anomaly imagine what can go wrong when you are out on the water. Any number of emergency situations can arise. Boaters need to take safety seriously and actively employ preventative measures to keep themselves and their passengers safe.

Yesterday, the Compass posted some interesting questions to consider when planning a day on the water.

  1. Where are you are in relation to rescue resources?
  2. How will rescuers know where you are and if you are in danger?
  3. Do you have the right resources to keep yourself and others safe until rescuers arrive?

Tomorrow (or today for the lucky ones) kicks off the last long holiday weekend of the summer and many people are heading out to the water. It is a good time to think about the extraordinary things that can happen at the beach or while boating and take precautionary steps to be ready in the event of an emergency.

This recent news article lists some of things you can do to boat safe.
