  • Coast Guard Station Gulfport received a report early yesterday morning of a man who had not returned from a fishing trip off the coast of Mississippi. Several Coast Guard units launched a search and shortly after the helicopter arrived on scene the crew spotted a flickering light through their night vision goggles. Further investigation revealed it was the missing fisherman who lit a signal fire on Horn Island.

  • The crew of the USNS Kanawha contacted Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads early yesterday morning reporting they had been struck by a rogue wave approximately 60 miles east of Virginia Beach and had four injured crewmembers. Based on the severity of the injuries, a Coast Guard flight surgeon recommended a medical evacuation. Two helicopters from Air Station Elizabeth City arrived on scene, hoisted the injured sailors and took them to shore for medical attention.

  • A helicopter deployed aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Munro launched and hoisted a man from a cliff face while fighting 45 mile-an-hour winds Wednesday evening on Unalaska Island about 22 miles southwest of Dutch Harbor. The man used his Personal Locator Beacon device to send his location and an emergency alert to authorities after he fell down the cliff face.
