We CAN all be Guardians

Have you ever wanted to be in the Coast Guard? Maybe you do, but you don’t want to wear the uniform or join a military service… Well, here is your chance to get involved. You CAN help guard our coastline.

The Northwest Coast Guard has a program called Citizen’s Action Network (CAN). From the shoreline, you can help to save lives and property, prevent pollution incidents, and protect the coast. A recent new story discusses the origin of CAN and the Coast Guard Auxiliarist who founded the program.

A similar nationwide initiative called America’s Waterway Watch (AWW) enlists the active participation of those who live, work or play around America’s waterfront areas to watch out for and report suspicious activity. Who better to notice unusual behavior or unexpected items on the waterfront than recreational and commercial mariners, maritime employees, and coastal residents?

To report suspicious activity, call the National Response Center (NRC) at 877-24WATCH. The NRC also has an online reporting tool for those who prefer email.
