He is our hero. We are his legacy.

This blog entry comes from a recruit who attended the building dedication aboard Training Center Cape May for Petty Officer 3rd Class Nathan Bruckenthal, who died during combat operations off the coast of Iraq. The ceremony was held today, the 13th anniversary of Bruckenthal’s graduation from basic training. Seaman Recruit Johnson was tasked with holding Bruckenthal’s company flag. Johnson’s company was also in attendance to the ceremony and they recited The Coast Guard Ethos. This is his story from that day.

Some may see Coast Guardsmen jumping out of helicopters, driving boats through breaking surf or firing dangerous weapons as intimidating, or even frightening, but to the more than 200 Coast Guard recruits who got a sneak peek of the Coast Guard’s Top 10 Videos of 2012, the thought of doing these things is motivating. The recruits packed the Ida Lewis Auditorium at Coast Guard Training Center Cape May for the second annual Coast Guard Top 10 Video Premiere at the only enlisted Coast Guard basic training facility in the nation.

A foundation of proficiency

Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Bob Papp, the Coast Guard’s 24th commandant, was the keynote speaker for the ceremony and offered insight, wisdom and knowledge to the recruits. He discussed the Coast Guard’s many missions and the challenging environment in which its people serve, as well as the Coast Guard’s foundation of proficiency.
