While much of the nation watched and a significant segment of the Coast Guard responded to the fire and resulting oil spill when the Deepwater Horizon exploded and sank in the Gulf of Mexico last Thursday, the U.S. Senate confirmed Vice Admiral Robert J. Papp to the rank of admiral and appointed him to be the 24th Commandant of the United States Coast Guard. The confirmation was approved by unanimous consent.

Papp will assume the role of commandant currently held by Admiral Thad Allen at a change of command ceremony on May 25, 2010.

Congratulations to Vice Admiral Papp and his leadership team on their confirmations!
