  • Guardians medevaced a hunter off of Burnt Mountain in Oregon yesterday. A helicopter from Air Station North Bend was deployed to rescue the man who had an injured leg and bring him to a local hospital.

  • Local law enforcement assisted Guardians in the rescue of two German divers off the coast of Sanibel Island, Florida. The divers spent four hours clinging to a diving buoy after their boat drifted more than a mile away. The two men were spotted by a local sheriff’s  airplane before being picked up by a Coast Guard small boat and returned to their vessel.

  • Naval aviators assisted the Coast Guard in the rescue of five divers off the southern tip of Saipan earlier today. The Command Center at Coast Guard Sector Guam guided a Navy helicopter to the site of the missing divers who were then returned to shore.

  • A former Guardian has been posthumously awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for acts of bravery during World War II. Ensign John Simmons was honored for his role in the rescue of survivors form the Army transport vessel U.S.S. Dorchester on February 3, 1943. Simmons was among the crew of the Comanche who responded when the boat was torpedoed by a German U-boat off the coast of Greenland. The loss of 700 of 900 men aboard the Dorchester would be the second largest loss of life at sea in WWII.
