Day 1: Coast Guard Innovation Expo

As the Compass mentioned last week, we are covering the 2009 Coast Guard Innovation Expo LIVE as the exhibits, panel discussions and other events unfold.

Today kicked off on a high note with opening remarks from VADM David Pekoske, Vice Commandant United States Coast Guard, and ADM Thad Allen, 23rd Commandant of the United States Coast Guard.
Following the opening ceremony was the keynote speaker, Mr. Kerry Patterson. Mr. Patterson is a cofounder of VitalSmarts, a global leader in organizational performance and leadership. He is also the author of three New York Times bestsellers:
- Influencer: The Power to Change Anything
- Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High
- Crucial Confrontations: Tools for Resolving Broken Promises, Violated Expectations, and Bad Behavior
His entertaining presentation focused on how to increase influence. The big take-away for me was that will, or self-discipline, can be a learned skill. The key to improving will is through deliberate practice – training, breaking skill into small parts, welcoming feedback and expecting setbacks.
Throughout the rest of the day the 1000 attendees mingled between the over 600 innovative exhibits and the enlightening panel sessions with industry, government & academia leaders.

The energetic buzz, networking opportunities and engaging conversations could be found throughout the Virginia Beach Convention Center whether people were gathered around an exhibit, drinking coffee in the hallway or sitting around a table.
