Does anyone know whether either Captain John Bergman or Ludwig Oetting are shown here in this photo at the top of this post? They both were deployed here at this Umpqua LS Station for lifesaving duty in 1900 through 1910. Ludwig Oetting is my great grandfather and was both a sailor and surfman from this location. Thank you.

I was stationed at Sullivan's Island Life Boat Station in 1961-62 when they were constructing the newest (and last) lighthouse in the U.S. it is known formally as "Charleston Light" it replaced Morris Island lighthouse which is slowly being reclaimed by the ocean. This new light is a triangle, rather than circular (hurricane proof), it had a 1,000,000 candle power light in it, it is the only lighthouse to ever be built with an elevator, and also constructed out of steel/aluminum panels for the outer skin. It is black half way down and white half way up. The Life Boat station has been turned over to the US Park Service for family living quarters..a terrible loss, as far as I am concerned.
