2011 Video of the Year: Day 9

Thirteen miles northeast of the Big Island, Hawaii, a pilot makes a crash landing into the ocean and a Coast Guard aircrew is there to rescue him. More than 4,000 miles away, a Coast Guard boatcrew interdicts a cocaine-laden drug sub in the Caribbean Sea seconds before it sinks.

These real-life operations, like many performed by the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard, largely go unseen by members of the public. While some may get a glimpse of the action, we wanted to give you something more…

We combed through all of the Coast Guard’s videos from throughout the year to select the top 10 videos highlighting the year’s most compelling cases from the work done every day by America’s Coast Guard. Now we need your help in deciding the top three!

The 2011 Video of the Year nominee for today can’t get you any closer to the action. The video features Coast Guard Cutter Mohawk’s boatcrew closing in on a drug sub. You will then see the suspect smugglers come out of the sub’s hatch and scuttle the vessel in an attempt to hide any evidence – an act typical in previous interdictions. Though the drug sub sank during the interdiction, Mohawk’s crew was able to recover a quantity of cocaine before it sank.

Voting for the 2011 Video of the Year contest will be open through Jan. 13, 2012. Coast Guard Compass will publish one of the top 10 videos each day until New Year’s Eve, including commentary from a servicemember who participated in the mission.

Just watch the videos as they are posted on Compass, Facebook and YouTube and then cast your vote! To vote for your favorite videos, choose “Like” on the Coast Guard’s Facebook page or on the Coast Guard’s YouTube 2011 Videos of the Year playlist.
