I have proudly served in Operations as a volunteer in the Auxiliary for 15 years, and you, and all the largely unsung heroes of the US Coast Guard are exactly why. I am also glad to see that this spectacular feat of competence, bravery and determination in the face of chaos, terror and unprecedented murder may finally be acknowledged and heralded by and to the people of America who have been unaware, largely, of the accomplishments of that day by good men and women, in and out of uniform, who did what had to be done on the very worst day of our Republic.

I salute you, sir, and all who serve.

When I was 19 I was turned down for service in the coast guard due to asthma. It was a great disapointment and still I wonder what could have been. But one thing that never changed is my love and respect for the Coasties. They may be the smallest part of the military, but they are the first responders in time of crisis on our water and land as well. I feel they dont get the respect and recognition they deserve, and that has always bothered me, but I have always proudly let everyone who knows me know how much I love the Coast Guard. I am pleased but not surprised to read of Carlos Perez and his abilities and work. I am never surprised to see my Coasties excell. On a funny note, many, many years later a dog of mine that was born in my home was adopted by a Coastie and became one herself. She served with honor and ability. I didnt make it, but my doggie did and I am proud of her too. It takes special people to work with, care for and bring out the best in service animals too. Way to go Coasties.
