Adm. Papp Testifies on Coast Guard’s Budget

Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Bob Papp testified about the Service’s fiscal year 2012 (FY 2012) budget request before the House Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation today. The Commandant was joined by Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard Michael Leavitt at the hearing.

During the hearing, Adm. Papp made the following comments on the FY 2012 budget request as part of his oral statement:

“The challenge we face is that the rising costs of running aging cutters, boats, aircraft and shore facilities quickly consume any positive increment in our budget. In an effort to avoid any reduction in front line operations, we have carved out over $140 million by directing management efficiencies, and making targeted reductions in administrative costs and professional services. We will reinvest these savings in front-line operations. These were tough choices, but I think the right ones.”

    What’s wrong with this picture?! The CG always preaches that they want to look like the rest of America; however, they continue to fail. This is why I have retired! In most cases, I was the only minority in the wardroom.

    I served in the Guard from 64-68, and we were fighting for a few bucks back then to help our old aging fleet. Does anything ever change? Just keep adding more duties.

    Agreed ~ Glad people actually read the budget and didn’t just post something to be heard.

    There are so many abused programs in the military, if someone would just take a round turn on some of these programs than the military could save millions, 30 years and I have seen a lot of abuse. How do you take action on these issues? If you try to go through a district or sector people laugh at you and tell you no one cares.
