Captain Keith Colburn is known to millions of television viewers as the skipper of the Wizard, a crab fishing vessel on the Discovery Channel hit series Deadliest Catch. What you may not know is that Captain Colburn is also a spokesperson for the Coast Guard’s Boat Responsibly safety initiative through the Boating Safety Division. Over the weekend, Colburn was recognized for his contributions to safe boating in America with the Coast Guard’s Pillar of Support Award.
“I am extremely honored to receive the Pillar of Support Award, and I would like to thank the Coast Guard for this great honor,” Colburn said. “In my line of work we are just trying to stay safe and come home and we increase our chances by wearing our life jackets.”
As a celebrity spokesperson Colburn has filmed several public service announcements and regularly engages the public through safe boating events around the country.
In announcing the award, Rear Admiral Kevin Cook, director of prevention policy for the Coast Guard said, “Captain Colburn is a well-known and respected seaman who recognizes the importance of responsible boating safety procedures.”
Colburn’s expertise landed him in front of lawmakers in Washington, DC last week. The Wizard‘s skipper appeared before Congress last week as an expert witness on energy development in the Outer Continental Shelf and the future of the world’s oceans. (Click here for a transcript of his testimony.)
