itCG-Migrants intercepted, Toledo thanks, fishermen rescue, performance award

  • Guardians intercepted four Cuban migrants and a suspected smuggler yesterday. The migrants were traveling in a 19-foot boat 70 miles south of Key West when they were interdicted by the crew from the 110-foot Coast Guard Cutter Key Biscayne. The migrants were returned to Cuba and the smuggler was handed over to Customs and Border Patrol agents.

  • Guardians on the West coast also had a migrant smuggling case yesterday. Last night in Southern California, a Coast Guard helicopter crew and a 33-foot boat from Coast Guard Sector San Diego worked with the Department of Homeland Security’s Maritime Task Force to intercept a boat carrying 15 suspected illegal immigrants. One immigrant escaped by jumping from the small boat and swimming for the beach. The remaining 14 illegal immigrants were transferred to Customs and Border Protection agents and arrested.

  • Guardians are used to simple thank-yous and nods of appreciation, but yesterday they got a little more than that from a very grateful group of survivors. Coast Guard Station Toledo and the four Guardians who rescued eight people from a sinking boat near downtown Toledo this summer received a visit from seven of the survivors and accepted a proclamation of gratitude from the group. A Good Samaritan also was honored by the group for his efforts in the rescue.
